Medicare Guidelines for Routine or Screening PAP Smears
Medicare provides a SCREENING pap smear/ thin prep for women every 24 months.
Medicare guidelines state that it is the doctor’s office responsibility to call the Medicare Provider Service – 1-866-837-0241 – prior to performing the test, to verify and confirm that the patient has not had a screening pap smear/thin prep test during the preceding 24 month limit and is eligible for this test or an ABN must be signed by the patient.
